Leaking Draincock

Just changed the thermostat yesterday, and noticed this afternoon the radiator draincock is leaking. Reservoir dropped about an inch or so overnight.

I monkeyed with it a bit while draining the radiator, as it was draining awfully slowly. Funny thing is, it seems to leak slower at least if I losten it back a tad so that the knob is horizontal instead of vertical, if that makes sense.

Any tricks here (teflon tape, RTV, etc.), or do I need to replace the draincock? It CAN be replaced right - I don't need a new radiator do I?:icon_surprised:

Thanks!

Sounds like maybe there is some sediment stuck in it causing it to not seal and drain slowly. Maybe drain the rad and pull the petcock right out and see if you can blow it out with some air maybe.

Just be VERY careful It will break in a heart beat if you try to force it on re-assembly!!

It can be replaced. You local auto parts will have them. It has an O ring, and it may be damaged.:)shady

Thanks guys-

I got a new drain "plug" thinking the o-ring was probably gone, since I didn't remember seeing one at all. Pulled out the old one again and the o-ring was there, but was almost flat, flush with the plug shaft - wasn't making a seal. New plug seems to be doing fine.

On another happy note, the heat now comes up faster and hotter, and the temp gauge comes up to normal now too with the new thermostat.

Thanks again!

-Bill
