I just read the piece from Mike ( tech site ) about installing a K&N filter on a 2.9 liter engine. He mentions removing the airbox and related items. Except for the intake hose why not just leave the airbox as is in case of emissions testing ? Also has anyone tried this and with what results ? :icon_cheers:

Why not just buy the setup with the polished tube and cone filter. I run AEM cone filter and a polished tube setup and I love it. I used to run K&N until I switched to AEM and loved the better performance and the easy to clean and no oil cone filter. K&N filters just are not all that great to me anymore. Pain to clean and then re-oil them. Sometimes if you add too much oil you ruin the performance. My setup did not cause any emmisions problem. The K&N should not too cause any issues either.

And sometimes giving the MAF sensor a good coat of oil too. Been there, done that.

lol That's if you have one. My '89 doesn't. When you get a bit older, gas mileage matters more than HP ( God I hated saying that..)

Nothing will increase your fuel milage like sucking in hot engine compartment air. :icon_rofl:

A 3" cone filter will clamp on the outside of the stock tube and stay put and will sit in the bottom of the stock air box. I did this because when I got mine the lid was broken and it needed a filter anyway...got one at Autozone for $20. Going down the road it gets cool air from the stock air snorkel behind the grill. Last I checked I was getting an avg of 22mpg with 173,000 mi.

i have this on my b2....$20 at autozone. no way in hell i'd spend more than that on it. yeah, it sucks in hot air from the engine, but it accelerates better than the stock box did. i just wash it out every now and then, screw putting oil on it, then i replace it once i think it's had enough

as for emissions, i would put the stock box back on when i had to get it inspected each year. it wouldnt pass with the cone filter on. but it's so old now, i dont have to get the emissions checked, just a safety inpsection.

That isn't really going to affect your ability to pass the emissions test anywhere in NEPA. Your test should only be the gas cap passing the pressure/vacuum test and a visual inspection to see that the EGR valve (that the 89 2.9L wasn't equipped with anyway), PCV, fuel injection, evap system and the cats are on and present, they don't even have to work, they just have to look like they might work.

Soo... Did you just ask for a 3 inch cone filter ? Any specific brand name ?

it's a spectre i think. i think it has a 3" opening on it. it fits inside the factory intake tube and then i have a hose clamp on that. any parts store will carry them. i've bought basically the same thing at pep boys too.

Uh, Eddie. You know you don't have a fender, right?
