I just got back from driving my 86 b2 with a A4LD freshly rebuilt by myself (first one but I am an automotive Machinist by trade and had the rebuild info from on here and other sites). So either way...It drove decent but then again I didnt' go above 35mph and it idled for about 10 min before I took her out. When I got back and 30 min run time the trans pan was very warm/hot to the touch. I could keep my hand on it but it was rather hot... It seems a bit much for such a short drive. Does anyone know what the operating temp is for these transmissions and or pan temp if i used an infrared thermo? I have 300+ parts in this trans and alot of time so I'd prefer not to damage it. Also what is the total fill amount from COMPLETELY EMPTY trans & torque convert.? Thanks in advance all!

does it have an trans oil cooler on it?
idk, they warm up pretty quickly.. i'd say its normal. but idk for sure

in the tech forum i found this..
9. Add 3-quarts (5-6 quarts if the torque convener was drained) of fluid to the transmission through the filler tube.

yes it has 8 quarts in it as of now. and it DOES have a pretty good size cooler on it.

then i wouldn't worry about anything..
or if you want- add a gauge to it and see what its showing

Operating temp for most autos is about 185-210* F. Warm or hot to the touch but able to keep your hand on it sounds about normal to me.

the pan is sitting between 165 to 189 drivers side the cooler exhaust is on passenger. went for a 15 mile drive. Seems to drive ok no more shudder however it shifting funny first doesn't seem to want to shift once it got warmed up. and when i shift 1 to 2 to drive seems to not shift into second....bah! frustrating!

incase this issue continues anybody know of a good place to get a rebuilt valve body for an 86 first gen trans?
