Ok I have looked at just about everything I can befor I ask these so I'm sorry if it has been said, just show me a link.

I have a 89 bronco II, I have seen it said the easyest 4.0 swap is 90 BII with a 90 4.0. Why? is the 89 and 90 BII the same? And isnt the 4.0 all the same 90-93?

I'm trying to keep my eyes peeled for a cheap ranger/exsplorer on Craigslsit while I have cash but I just wana know what to look for for the easyest wiring.

I have seen it said people got away with out cutting any wires by swaping the whole harness and dash. Is there a way to do this with out swaping the dash? Because my chances of finding what I want with a gray dash is low.

I know someday I'm doing this 4.0 swap I just dont want to get into a wiring nightmare.

Ive heard 90 b2s have a maf sensor as well as the later 4.0s.The explorers have the Computer in the same spot in the vehicle as the b2 its under the hood of the ranger plus if you change dashes it has rear wiper ect.in the dash.I think most people that change dashes its to get the old style dash out they don't plug in together with the motor loom.

How did you get around the distributor issue? Or should I say the lack of one on the 4.0?

Mine is a 89 as well. I did the swap from a 91 explorer. My best advice is to take all the engine harness from the 4.0. I started on the passenger side and replaced the harness as I went. I also replaced the dash harness. You don't have to replace the dash.
The problem I ran into were the electronis transfer case shifter, power windows, and the power locks. Explorers ran thier harneses for these differently. Also I hade to repin some of the connectors on the drivers side fenderwell. These run thins like the fuel pump. Repinning was actually simple. Match the same color wires up to the same color wire. The windows harness was simple also. It is all hooked up, but there is always power to the windows. ie, i can roll them up and down without the keeys in. Haven't hooked up the power locks yet
The most important thing is go slow and label everything. The first one is always the hardest. Good luck with all:icon_thumby:

The easy way to do this swap is to use a RANGER harness from a 1990-92.

Though you need the ENTIRE engine bay harness.

the ranger harness is LESS different compared to your current harness than an explorer harness is.

Though there will be some things missing that you'll need to put back in... the power wiring to your Rear window wiper/defogger, etc.

You'll need the harness from the computer (mounted in the passenger side kickpanel through the firewall on the passenger side all the way around the front, across the engine and all the way to the big round firewall plug on the drivers side.

I STRONGLY recommend you aquire the ford EVTM manuals for both your Bronco2 and for whichever specific year 4.0 Ranger (1990-92) you actually end up using as a donor.

Frankly if you have the right tools onhand you can extract the harness from the vehicle in about an hour, it typically takes about half again as long to put the "new" one in (I can do in about half as long in either case... only because I've had practice and don't need to even think about what tools I'll need)

"changing the dash" doesn't really save you anything, you are simply trading away one annoying job for another.
but changing the dash is "mechanical" and doing the wiring work is more "mental"

It's more a matter of what you are more comfortable doing but I personally recommend leaving the dash alone.

No, 1990 Bronco2's do not have MAF, only SOME of them sold in California did
the system is NOT the same.

swapping in a complete 4.0 harness really isn't that big a deal

Swaping to a 4.0 where a 2.9 has been is really one of the easiest "dis-similar" engine swaps that can be done because of how much is the same.
