I was told that tuned header tubes were all the same length for proper scavenging. The center tube is considerably shorter. Are these billed 'tuned' headers?

A 'tuned' header is a full length race header, where every primary tube is the same length (usually 28" to 32" depending on what rpm range the engine will be running) and fitment into the engine compartment is not much of a concern.
They end up routing the primary tubes however they can to get them to be equal length. They often are NOT CARB/Emission legal for public roadways.
You basically are building a complete custom exhaust system...$$$$

These stainless steel headers have varying length 1-1/2" diameter primary tubes that merge into a 2-1/2" collector and are designed to fit exactly in place of the restrictive OEM cast iron 'log' manifolds.
These flow wayyyyy better and provide much better exhaust scavenging vs. the OEM log manifolds.
They bolt perfectly to the OEM Y downpipe/Cat system, have an EGR connection, and are CARB certified...so no emissions issues nor MIL codes on your gauge cluster when using these headers.

They let the engine breathe and rev.....and have a really nice growl!

I tend to doubt it....as JBA lists them for 1998 - 2005 3.0L V6 Rangers.
If they fit other 3.0L Ranger years, JBA would certainly claim those years too.
I don't know what changed, exhaust wise, from '97 to the '98 model years.
Maybe compare your '97 Ranger exhaust and Y pipe to pictures of '98 - '05 Ranger exhaust manifolds/ Y pipe set-up.....?

Probably nothing exhaust wise, but it's a different front suspension/steering which could affect the way the headers were designed to fit.

Is this a crack?

No,
The flanges were machined with that split by JBA when they manufactured the headers....don't ask me why.

Not trying to jack this thread, but...

Some people asked if these headers fit older trucks. We don't have many options for upgraded parts for the 3.0 so I figured I'd pass this along as I couldn't find an answer before trying it for myself.

I installed this exact set of headers in my 97 recently. They do fit, they bolt on and clear the steering shaft and everything else just fine. I suspect that the factory y-pipe would bolt up (at least for a 97) but I don't know for sure because I cut mine to get the stock manifolds out. Either way, the most you'd have to do is make your own EGR tube (if your truck has EGR) and possibly modify the y-pipe to work. I made my own EGR tube by welding half of my original to the rear half of one from a 98, pretty simple to do.

Received this morning. Yay! Much cheaper than buying or making adapters to use the headers I got from the junk yard.

You can also get flexible egr tubes, rout them as needed. Just need to make sure they are secured with some kind of clamp as the vibrations can make them break.
