is this the right transmission for a 1990 2.9L 4x4

What did it come out of? 1998 or newer Ranger I am assuming since I see the CV style front output on the transfer case? Looks like it was behind a 4.0 so technically it should fit your truck... if you had a Mitsubishi transmission previously, you will run into some clearance issues around the shifter where it goes through the floor but that is easily solved.

That does not look like a Mazda transmission to me. I am guessing it is a Mitsubishi, but it has been a long time since I have seen one.

It's an M5OD and almost certainly from a 4.0 truck. It doesn't appear to have the 3.0 or 2.3 bellhousing bolt pattern either.
