Hey, cp2259, Thanks... I think ;)

Can you send me a link that shows the difference in the bellhousings of a 92-97 era 4.0 (pushrod style, not overhead cam... those are 98 I think) and a 3.0? Besides the guy who's got this and "my mechanic" (code name to a friend who's a mechanic), NAPA told me the difference is the clutch. Autozone shows the diameter of the clutch for the 3.0 is 9.125" and for the 4.0 it is 10". The guy at NAPA however stated that all I needed to do was replace the 10" one with the 9.125" and slap it in.. (sorta speak)... lol.. It makes sense the bell housing would be bigger but he said that was not the issue... as well did my mechanic, and other stuff I have read... even Wikipedia says they are all the M50D-R1... So... being a researcher... can you show me "the evidence"... I do thank you for your time!

Tim.

They are both m5od r1 trannies. I don't have a link but I've swapped a 4.0 into my previously 3.0 ranger, they are not the same bolt pattern.. Clutches are different too, anyone who tells you that you can bolt a 3:0 tranny to a 4.0 has never seen either ones bolt pattern. 2000 was the last year of the pushrod 4.0 in rangers

A tranny guy just told me you are correct... different bolt patterns AND the starters are on different sides... sucks as I had that one for $200.00 and the clutch kit from amazon Luk for under $100... slave $50.. flywheel $50 but I plan on inspecting mine and NOT expecting to need to replace it. Thanks for your help!
