hello so recently my 4.0l has been making a ticking sound in the top end like sounds like the common sound of a loose rocker but its intermittent (happens more often at idle but sometimes at higher rpms) has this happened to anyone? thanks in advance.

I have the rolling ghost tic on my wounded 4.0

It's a 4.0

I assume it's a bad lifter. This engine is a turd ...I popped some valve seals and it has a rail crack.....so it leaks and smokes.

I was doing a 4 whizzer eco swap ... But ended up with a driftranger.....err 350 z....so I will be looking at it now....lil bob kind of took me into a new direction.

Typically you can just do pushrods and rockers and they quiet right down.

If it's a lifter...I will probably just get a different engine ... Except unlike last time...I will run it on the ground for a few hours before I buy it.

Much cheaper then lifting heads and doing rockers Pushrods and lifters.

That_4.0_ranger,

Since you have an OHV 4.0l, I would pull the rocker arms and do a complete Rocker Arm assembly tear down, clean and inspect. If it's an oiling issue, in just the time it takes to clean, inspect and reinstall.

While the rocker arms are off, you can improve its oiling potential by up drilling all the oil orifaces one drill bit size, then chamfer and deburr them. This will improve the top end oiling and may resolve your noise.

The inspection may also show if your rockers and or push rods are worn, needing to be replaced to correct the lifter preload.

pulled both covers and everything is good and tight so im now wondering if the new alternator is making the noise or even one of my pullys?
