I am experiencing an engine ticking noise on my 93 Ford Ranger with 3.0 engine. The truck only has 100,000 miles, but seems like it was really worked hard on a farm by the previous owner. If you let the truck idle, you can hear the ticking noise grow (to be quite prominent) and fade (can barely hear it) without changing the engine RPM. This only occurs at idle and goes away completely under acceleration. My dad, who is a mechanic, said it is not the lifters because that would be a constant noise. It's not an exhaust noise. I took the front cover to see if the timing chain was slapping against the case, but this is OK. My dad believes it is the crankshaft thrust bearing because there is a little play in front pulley. It can be moved in and out with a screwdriver. This seems possible since the sound gets louder and softer. Any suggestions is much appreciated!!
