2.5L ('98-'01) Intake Air Temperature reading hot

The outside temperature is 74deg Fahrenheit, but on my OBD2 scanner it reads the Intake air temperature as 134deg Fahrenheit.
I'm just wondering if this is bad for the engine? My idle is around 1000rmps fully warmed and I get this foul smell from the exhaust.

It looks to me like its bad. My other ranger's IAT reads 84deg Fahrenheit I'm also having a hard time locating it. Is it built into the MAF sensor?

possibly, other times it's a 2 wire sensor in the intake tube or air box. Honestly I don't remember where it would be based on my '97...

This doesn't by chance have an aftermarket "cold air intake" does it? if so, that would explain a lot since that puts the intake just over the exhaust manifold... 150F stopped at idle isn't unheard of, underhood temps can get high and the intake velocity is very low at idle so it has time to warm up.

No aftermarket cold air intake. Just the factory air box.

Where is the sensor?


That can be normal at idle. What is it at cold start?

It is a relative....just depends on where it is.

It should go down to within a few degrees of ambient once your moving.

Not sure what engine you have.....or what method the tools you are using are implementing to scale temp.

Bobby, it's in the 4 cylinder section labeled as a 2.5L so that should help...

The alternator went out again in my '97 so while I was there I snapped a pic of the air temp sensor in the air tube... the two wire sensor just ahead of the throttle body.
