installing compass in dash?

I am thinking about getting a small magnetic ball compass to fill the hole one of the 12v outlets used to occupy. My main concern is whether it will be affected by the wiring behind the dash. I would rather figure something else out if it won't be functional. Any alternative ideas?

Magnetic compasses in vehicles are always a problem, especially down in a dashboard. The only one I ever had that worked to any degree was mounted in the middle of the windshield by a suction cup.
