I have an '87 2WD Ranger and I have access to a complete '96 2WD front suspension for the twin piston caliper upgrade. I'm wondering if the front track width is wider on a '96? I know the rear axle is wider so I would assume the front width is too but I'm not sure. The '96 beams and radius arms are already removed so it's hard to measure. I don't want the front wheels sticking way out for a tiny upgrade in braking.

I've never read anything about that swap making it wider. Doesn't mean that it won't. Hopefully someone with more knowledge than me ansewrs, I'm interested too.

If I ever get my parts installed, I'll be able to tell you. I've had everything painted, preassembled, and ready to go for a while now, only I'm using the Sport Trac rotors with a caliper relocation bracket I made.

I'd put my junk in a wood chipper before I'd own a any GM product. You're basically telling the world you're built like a Ken doll from the waist down when you buy a Chevy anyway. If you could get the track measurements when you get done that'd be great. I haven't read anything about them being wider either but those year model trucks are visibly bigger than 1st gens.

IF it does make it wider, you could possibly get a '96 rear axle and that should put the rear wheels in alignment with the fronts

my '88 now has 96 beams and brakes. it measures 49 1/2 inches between rims, measured directly under the ball joints at the lip at the widest point of the rim. the rims are stock aluminum rims.
i have not noticed any great protuberance of tire from the wheel well but i would say , if there was no rubber on the rim and a straight edge was put on the outside of it, the edge would hit the fender about a half inch into the wheel opening. hope that helps.
oh, for those red necks amongst us, protuberance means 'stick out'

Well, technically, protrude means stick out. Protuberance is the item that protrudes.

But that's an awful lot of spelling issues to say "sticks out".

What is the rear measurement. Is the front wider than the rear.

the rear measures 48 13/16 so the front is about 3/4 inch wider. although i have the mustang rear disc setup, the rims still mount right to the axle flange, no change there.
i have a front sway bar. what a difference it made in handling. love it. but, there's always a but, it interferes with the sleeve for adjusting the alignment. the bolt hits the bar. have to remove the bolt to turn the sleeve. once it's all tightened up, it doesn't hit anything. no idea which truck donated the bar beyond a series 1 or 2. may even have been a 4wd. when i put it on, i had a set of plastic links and a set of steel ones. one of the plastic had split so i used the steel. don't remember if they are the same length or not.

The 96 axle will be a bit wider, but if you stay with your stock tire size the tires will stay inside the fenders.
