I bought a 88 ranger 4x4 2.9 a4ld trans put a rebuilt motor in it and didnt seat the torque converter all the way and bolted up the trans. I didnt start it or anything figured out it was wrong when I couldn't turn the motor to install the nuts on the tc. so I pulled motor back fixed tc and reinstalled motor. Now I have a leak in the bell housing that only leaks when warmed up. I also have a strange vibration when you first take off but only if you get on it. kind feels like wheel hop don't know if this related to the trans or something else any help will be great.

You may have damaged the front seal when you miss stabbed the converter.

The vibration could be a tight ujoint if it only does it when you take off.

yea the front seal would have to be replaced for sure. my best advice would be change the seal and the bushing on the bellhousing. trust me, if you dont then there could be a possibility that it will leak no matter how many times you replace just the seal. Ive had this happen to me before. Take my advice, to avoid further problems and possibly screwing up the trans. Change the front seal and the bushing. When you do replace the bushing you would have to make sure the tc sets in right cuz its gona be a tighter fit so more force would have to be used to set the tc right.
And the vibration is going to be the U-Joints or that driveshaft support that those 2 piece shafts have. Make sure the rubber isnt too worn or cracked on that support becuase it will get worse. And make sure to check all the u-joints. I had the same problem with that too and the same way ur describing. So check the U-Joints and the driveshaft support.:icon_thumby:

Thanks for the info I realy thought messed something up. Just was wondering what bushing it is and where do I get one? I found the seal with no problem at advance but can't seam to find the bushing. I found a whole bushing kit on ebay. Don't really want to get a whole kit. One last question the spacer behind the flywheel had a piece chiped off looked to be this way for a while so I reinstalled it will this be a problem? Thanks for your help. Lewis

I bought my bushing from a place that carries nothing but transmissions and every part for them. Its called TPU (Transmission Parts Unlimited). You might be able to go to transmission shop and see if they cant get one for you that way you dont have to get the whole kit.
As far as the spacer behind the flywheel, i aint too sure off. But by the way your saying then it seems like it wont be a problem.
