Hey everyone!

1997 Ranger 4x4 4.0l 5spd non-tilt steering column

Long story short I bought the truck without a key. The ignition switch was pulled out and zip tied under the dash. I had to push the little metal rod on the switch to start the truck. The ignition cylinder stayed in the off position and the steering lock doesn't work. I finally put a new ignition cylinder in and it turns like it is supposed to. I went to mount the ignition switch under the steering column like it should be but the little plastic slide piece that the metal rod goes into didn't have a hole for the rod and it doesn't move when I turn the key.

Now my questions.....does the steering lock being broke have to do with that slide not moving? Is the only way to fix a broken steering lock and get that plastic slide to move to put in a new steering column?

Yes and no.

The locking mechanism for the steering wheel and the actuator(slides ignition switch) are part of the same assembly behind the key locking cylinder so yes, that being broken could cause actuator not to move.

No, you do not have to replace steering column.

This is an F-150 how to, Ranger should be similar: http://www.fordf150.net/articles/id...inder-Actuator-Rod-Replacement-9703-F150.html

You will have to get in there and see what parts are broken.
