Looking for a starting point- 87 ranger 2.9 v6- having idling issues, when it first starts up it idles high, after a while she starts to idle down to the point where she shakes then kicks back up again- vaccum leak?

changed- fuel pump, tank and filers, replaced both relays, new plugs, cap, wires, rotor, pcv and air filter- fule pressure 30 lbs, should probably be 40 but dont think thats doing it-

my guess is a vaccum line somewhere but looking to get everyones thoughts before a start looking-

anyone?

thanks-

I had the same problem with my '87 2.9. After changing the TPI, EGR Valve, EGR sensor and relay and engine coolant sensor (two wire) - I found a split in the EGR tube. It was sucking air back into the intake manifold instead of recirculating some of the exhaust gas which is very rich until the engine warms up. There's lots of other things such as a vacuum leak or faulty engine coolant sensor that could cause the problem.

idle air control valve

i did have that problem

until i changed my idal air control valve like hopster pointed out, i had to adjust the idle screw just a tad, but on a sour note the 800 watt amp and stereo my brother gave me killled my truck the other day while it was idling and it was very similar to the previous problem ( i just turned off the stereo for now), but maybe if you just intalled something that takes a lotta power?
