i little bout the O2 sensor....

Also, location depends on what vehicle. There are sometimes ones up near the headers on each side and usually some around the cat, either before or after. On my truck (87 Ranger) its just before the cat, and thats it. Only one.

And yeah it is needed for the truck to run properly. Otherwise, you'll throw a code on the trucks ECU and get a Check Engine light. They're cheap enough and easy enough to replace so it's always worth it.

Yep! You positively NEED IT! It's gotta do it's job to tell the computer what it should do to the fuel and timing for your engine to run properly. Don't even THINK of taking it out. It measures the OX in the exhaust and the computer makes the proper adjustments to the timing and fuel from the input of this sensor.
