That's really good mileage for that mix of driving. I'm getting 21 hiway 18 mixed overall driving

21 combined with a 4.0/4x4? Maybe with GWB or Obama math, maybe. Could never understand how forum posters get better fuel economy than everyone else?
Most of the people I know get 18-19 overall with the 4.0/2wd and the 3 with 4.0/4x4s get about 16-17 overall. My new work truck is a 2010 Ranger XL 4.0/4x4 and it gets 16 mpg.
Our fleet manager would love to know how you guys get 21 mpg.

3.73 rear and shifting the gears around 2500 and throwing it into fifth at 45 MPH. Beats my Dodge with a 4.7 which returned 13-14 and my SD which got 12 no matter what you did!

The Ranger mileage and especially the 4L is VERY dependent on driving style. My truck is probably one of the worse cases stock with 4L, auto, 4x4, 4.10 gears and 255/70-16 tires (245/75-16 blizzak snows right now).

Recently I've gotten 20/21mpg on the commute to work combine city/hiway/traffic in winter.

On the other side I was recently away on travel and it was a fun town and every intersection was a 4 wide drag race. Fun but I was getting 10mpg.

In between the two extremes with 15/16mpg is where most people end up.

When I bought my truck I wanted a trip computer with KM to empty, average speed ect... so I put in a ScanGauge II. Cool side effect it help save gas because you can see where the truck gets better mileage.

18 mpg on a 2002 FX4.

You mean a stock Ranger? Right? I have 33's and 4:10 and I get right at
300 miles on a tank of gas city/highway normal driving and not punching it at every traffic light or stop sign and not hauling a trailer or a boat of course. I add 14 gallons of gas at 300 miles watching the trip-odometer and I still have t least a few gallons left in the tank. My tank is supposed to be 17 gallons. My wife said this was pretty good for a lifted truck.

Stock as she left the Ford factory.

200 miles on 14 gallons sounds good. I want to go to 33's but don't want to kill my gas mileage too bad and I've been thinking that 33's changes the gears might even out the large tires and sounds like it is in your case :icon_thumby:

Hello future 33's for my truck :yahoo:

I constantly get 330 miles to the tank, 4.0 4x4 Super cab.

Shift points ,have everything to do with mileage.

Not a 4.0, a 98 3.0 2 by 4, (or is that a 4x2 ??(too much home renovation)).

I've gotten over 26mpg combined, freeway @ 70>80 and off rush hour in town. About 440 miles per tank or better. (10% ethanol does cause a 10% drop in mileage.) I do have a shell on the bed.

Then again, I'm a COF (certified old fart) and short shifter. 1,3,5 typically. My Vulcan will lug down to 20mph in 5th and pull smoothly(slowly) from there.

17-19.999998 MPG's 2002 4.0L 4x4(not using my 4wd) BTW winter gas sucks
