the 1998+ front diffs use a collapsable C clip/ring in a groove in the splines. a good hard pull collapses the ring as it hits the taper in the side gears.I'm not perfectly familiar with that model of Dana35. But, if it's like the others, there is a C-clip holding the shaft in, at least on the passenger side. Drain the diff, pull the cover, remove the center cross pin. That allows you to push the shaft in far enough to see and remove the C-clip.
