Hey I need help on how to identify a c4. Im working on building a street ranger and I have a 351 and Im trying to find a c4. I think I found to in the junkyard one is a 72 ford torino with a 351 and the other is in a 79 ford 150 with a 351. I don't want buy a c6 and find out its a c4 later. they both have 11 pan bolts I believe and the filler neck goes directly in the pan. Can anyone help me with this?

A C-4 has the 11 bolts you mentioned while a C-6 has 17. C-4 has a removable bellhousing while C-6 doesn't.

^^^ I didn't know about bolt count but the removable bell is spot on. Tho there is the fmx trans, it also has a removable bell, but I don't think it's common anymore. IIRC the fmx has a steel main body, not aluminum like the c-4.

Yep, the FMX was around also, had the removable bell and 14 bolts on the pan.

Also there were both case fill and pan fill C4's. As the name implies, the case fill the dipstick tube enters the case of the transmission where the pan fill the dipstick tube enters the pan itself.

A C5 has a really deep bellhousing compared to a C4 which makes things tighter under the hood of a Ranger.

The were not put into the vehicles you are looking at from the factory but they could have been swapped in.

The F150 definitely has a big block pattern C6 unless someone swapped a 351 Windsor into it although that is HIGHLY doubtful.

The Torino COULD have a 351W or a 351C and most likely an FMX/Cruise-o-Matic or a C6.

Couldn't you just go up to it and ask to see it's license and registration?

Out of curiosity, why are you going with a C4 over a C6? Size/parasitic power loss I assume?

C5 bell housing is over 6" deep c4 is under 6" i believe. Also c5 tranny pan will have a "bump" in the bottom.

The smaller tooth count c4 bell is just under 6 inches the larger tooth count is a bit over 6inches I believe
