I'm trying to figure out what 100qts of sand weighs. Google got me between 80 to 125 lbs per cubic foot, does that sound about right?

That's probably right. It'd depend pretty heavily on moisture content and what it's actually comprised of. Try calling the local quarry and see what they say about what they've got on hand. If you're referring to blasting sand/media, then it'll be a lot more consistent on a weight/volume basis.

Just trying to get an idea of how much weight I will have when I fill 2 50qt rubbermaid containers over my axle.

The sand is probably going to be whatever I find at the sand pit that is thawed enough to take.

Last year I ran 4 20kg bags and it was enough, so I think I will have at least that much.

Fill your container, weigh it. Add or remove as neccessary.

1 cubic foot = 7.48051948 gallons (80 - 125lbs)

That's about 10.7 pounds to 16.71 pounds per gallon.

50 / 4 = 12.5 (gallons)

133.75 - 208.88lbs per 50lbs container.

Finally: 267.5 - 417.76lbs

Based on the 75lbs above, I came up with 375 pounds (which seems extremely reasonable).

75 / 5 = 15lbs per pound
12.5 gallons * 15lbs * 2 containers = 375lbs.

FWIW, even just 180lbs of sand in the back of my truck made a noticeable difference.

We have a local landfill site that has a scale...they weigh you coming in and then going out again...if you know the base weight of the vehicle you can figure it out by driving there and get weighed...then turn around and tell them you forgot something...they shouldn't charge you for that...but they may think you're crazy...

When I first opened this up I thought for sure the question was going to come up- Whats heavier, a pound of sand or a pound of feathers?

Well obviously sand is heavier than feathers! Lol

Ok well I filled the two plastic containers with sand. My friend and I agree on about 100lbs in each. I think it is a little too much, but I can always shovel some out.

I would weigh a full container but the cheap plastic is stressed to its limits so I'm not moving it around unnecessarily.

Your right it is obvious, sand is heavier than feathers, but think hard....................................................................................................................a POUND.........of feather or ...........a POUND................of sand? The feather would have a greater volume and most likely a different mass, but the same weight.

You can never have to much, just drag one behind you with whatever excess youshoveled out, then you can refill it but until then it remains unsprung weight LOL

How do you plan on securing the containers so they don't slide around?

I run a bit better than 500 pounds of sandbags in my bed with zero problems, you'd either have to have a near dead engine or a blown out rear suspension for two rubbermaid containers to be too much.

I built a frame out of 2x4, fits into the little notches in the boxliner on either side of the wheelwells. Bolted it together with 1/4" 4"long screws. I'll post up pics when I'm not on my phone.

I just know this is going to be a rough one, little off the subject but close.
What weighs more, a pound of gold or a pound of feathers? Get your thinking hats on.
