hello i have a 86 2.9 and the bolts on the exhaust manifold broke and i cant get them out....... i was woundering how hard is it to remove the head. i have ac&cc. thanks for your oppinion.

It is not super difficult, provided you have reasonble tool sand willingness to learn and try. the removal of broken bolts will be easierwith the heads off as you're prolly already aware.

LOTS or wires to move...mark them, take pictures, take notes as to where they went, prior to unplugging them. Do the same for vacuum lines, hoses & cables. this makes going back together SOOOOO much better & far less frustrating.

check out the Tech Library (see above tab)...much good info there.

The 2.9 head bolts are single use items, if you remove the heads the bolts must be replaced.

Frankly it's easier to pull the engine out of the chassis...

If you really need to get at the exhaust manifold-to-head bolts
it's even easier if you put the truck on jackstands remove both front wheels and then remove the plastic inner fenders.

That'll give you a more or less straight shot at the bolts to drill the broken ones out.
