Not sure if this is the right forum
A few weeks back I post about a high speed (90 mph) clunking.
I replaced the u joints tires and shocks
The clunk went away but I could still feel a slight vibration at 80
Then this morning when I hit 80 it came back
It is a 2008 2wd automatic ranger with a 4 banger for the motor
It happened at 80 holding a constant speed
Any help is greatly appreciated
Thank you
Randy

Damn I'm impressed.... 90? I think I got my 4.0 up to 80 once, that was pedal to the metal.....

Maybe don't do 90? :dunno:

I was going down hill at the time and like I said it is now doing it at 80 (after replacing the ujoints tires and shocks and it going away for a month )which is our speed limit

Drive shaft may be out of balance, one of many possibilities. My son inherited a 2008 F-150, it shook like a dog sh-tting a peach pit, about 60 or so. Oddly enough the vibration went away at higher speeds. Does it go away if you go over the speed that it starts at?

Tires, u-joint, don't know what all else it might be.

Bad tires, bad tire balancing, bad wheel bearings, bad tie rods, bad ball joints, bad alignment, bad driveshaft, bad u-joints, driveshaft out of phase, bad pinion bearing, bad output shaft bearing...

When you replaced the u-joints, did you mark the flanges and drive shaft so everything got put back together in the same orientation?

If not, that may be the reason and the only fix is to either tear it all back apart and reorient (hoping you got the correct side) or take it to a driveshaft shop to get it rebalanced.

If you did, the above suggestions are the next places to look. Assuming a balance weight wasn’t accidentally knocked off while removing and installing the drive shaft.

The truck isnt really designed for those speeds...so unless its doing it at 70 and less you might not have anything wrong.

I doubt ford did intense NVH testing at 80-90mph.

My 2011 is struggling a bit in certain situations at 70 mph since the tire upgrade and the roof rack install.

The 3.73s and 31X10.5X15 tires are not a good match regardless what the tire gear chart night say. With winter being right around the corner, I need to pull the racks for easier snow removal.

But your basic premise is sound. When the Ranger was last designed, 70+ mph highway speeds weren’t a thing.

My 2.9 can still bury the speedo but ive only did it once. My nerves aint what they used to be.

Up to 70-75 id say it needs to be smooth...over that bets are off,

I’ve never tried. The only time I’ve gone significantly faster that 70 on purpose and for any length of time was in Texas with the 2019. It handled it well but is a much newer design with a much better engine match.

I’m not sure I’d wanna try the same with the 2011. Though, now that it has a rear sway bar, it might not be so bad.

I did it merging on the freeway trying not to get ran over (I94 during rush hour). i backed off pretty quick when i realized how fast i was going. I honestly thought i had forgotten to shift to 5th lol.

On the other hand my F250s 460 will bury it at 85 before you even know whats going on. Its so much quieter and smoother then the ranger im glad the cruise works lol

long shot, warped front rotors.

rear wheel bearings ?

the 2.3 Duratec easily hits 90. with a manual that's the top of 3rd.
after that aerodynamics take over, so does common sense.

Oh that engine will do way more than 90, I've had mine over 100 before the speed limiter cuts in. But that doesn't change the fact that the rest of the truck was never designed for those speeds. :ROFLMAO:
