I'm in the middle of a multi-week project on my Ranger. Among other things, I need to replace the clutch, flywheel, and rear main seal.

In reading about the rear main seal, a few people have mentioned using a tool to seat the seal. Others have said it is not necessary but I don't want to risk a bad installation on a part that is so difficult to get to.

The part number I found is:

OTC 7834

https://www.amazon.com/OTC-7834-Rear-Crankshaft-Installer/dp/B000RMMS9W/?tag=959media-20

Problem is in compatibility it lists only 1993+ 4.0 engines.

Is there a specific tool for the 92 and earlier 4.0? Or should they all be the same? Can't seem to find a compatible part #.

Thanks.

I don't know how that got converted to a WalMart link. I was looking at the same part # on Amazon for about $100.

Do a search for installing the seal. I saw someplace where they MADE the tool out of ABS/PVC for the install. I replaced mine without the tool just make sure it is seated flush is all i did.

I use a hub nut tool ;

For b-2 and ranger auto hubs.

So I get that there are different ways to install it, and I saw the one with the PVC tool. My question is more along the lines of if something changed with the crankshaft or seal diameter between 1992 and 1993, or if the part listing is wrong.

From the parts I was seeing, the crank and the seal part # did not change, so the tool should be the same. Just posted for a sanity check.

AFAIK the seal did not change. I did read recently somewhere that the pans changed and there is a revised gasket for that. I just had a 91 and 94 engine side by side and didn't notice any change to the pan, but I wasn't looking for it either.
