I have a 1999 Ford Ranger V6 4x4.It shifts really hard from 1st to 2nd,makes a faint chattering noise on the freeway and the over drive light stay on sometimes making it take off really slow.I have to turn the car off then back on for it to shut off.I checked for codes and there aren't any.I also checked the fluid and it's full.

Possibly the control solenoid does the oil smell burnt and do you know how old the filter is. I would say pull the pan and look for metal shavings small amounts is normal. Change the filter and add fresh oil. The computer controls the shift points but pulling the pan will give you an idea of the condition of the internals.

How hard is changing out a ring and pinion?

What kind of code reader did you use?.....some of the cheap code readers will not read transmission codes only engine codes...if the light is on or flashing there is a code set...if there is a code it will set the line pressure to max and it will have a harsh 1-2 shift.
