hello my name is drake from wi. im a welder at muza metals and just graduated form my 2year degree from fvtc for welding. currently have a 96 ford ranger with a 4.0 5speed 4x4 has a rapter fiberglass front clip 35in baja crawlers and 14in foa coil overs in the front i have big plans for this truck. i bought a mild built 68 302. still looking for the right tranny to go with. plan to finish the engine cage soon and then find a dana 44 and do the cut and turn. for the rear id like to throw a 9in with a 4link long travel but that will be down the road the engine swap is what im looking at doing now eather looking at getting a c4 with dana 20 tcase from early bronco or my dad has a 89 inline 6 with the zf not sure what way to go yet. but any ways ill be starting a thread on my build when it gets rolling little more and when the weather starts getting nicer.
thank you, drake

Great to have you. If you have any questions about how to do anything look around or ask. Somebody on the Station has most likely done it before and would be willing to help.

As far as your ranger is concerned, I'd say throw up some pics on a build thread and start showing her off :D

Welcome Drake, you found a great site. I'm just 30 mins West by Amherst. You might want to check out some of the similar build and what the guys have done. Kamshaft over in Appleton has been doing a lot of welding on his also.
Dave

sweet thats good to know that there is others near by doing home grown builds.
and ya as soon as i find my way around the site il throw some pics of wat i have so far.

The zf 42 you have would work great for 302 high torque tranny. is it wide or closed ratio ?im using a zf wide ratio mated with 4.9 in my ranger

ok i did a little digging from what i found all the sbf have the wide ratio and the bbf have the closed.

ZF S5-42 Close Ratio
3.79:1(Reverse), 4.14:1, 2.37:1, 1.42:1, 1:1, 0.77:1

ZF S5-42 Wide Ratio
5.24:1(Reverse), 5.72:1, 2.94:1, 1.61:1, 1:1, 0.76:1

as you can tell if this is correct you really would want the wide ratio

oh and b4 i forget i wanted to put up the specs for the 302 i just bought
68 302
bored .60over flat top pistons and balanced
dual pattern cam 283/304 duration, 444/452 lift with 115 centerline and 60 overlap
66 289 hi pro heads ported and polished on the exhaust upgraded springs with studs guide plates harland sharp roller rockers and poly locks
the intake is a victor jr 600 holly carb

this was on a 2wd c6 dose every one think this would work well with the zf?

i would go with zf 42 you have it will handle up to 420ft of torque. zf wide are great for nice granny gears is why im using it for my hybird f250 ranger im using as my fun truck

im thinking the same plus its ganna be free or close to free and i should be able to use the flywheel and clutch as well

well its been awhile but i finaly got a up date havent been wrenching at all yet but i been finding parts and i almost have every i got a high valume dual sump oil pan remote oil filter 32gal tear drop fuel cell dual pass radiator and have a new fly wheel in the mail. also finished blue prints for the engine cage and will be talking bent tube over in appleton to get the tubes bent up. and if all gose good will be pulling that zf5 tranny from my dads truck this next week il trow some pics up of what iv got and the blue print for the engine cage

finally started pulling out the zf tranny got all 6bell housing bolts off both drive shafts n cross member out any buddy got any good ideas on getting it loose from the clutch?
