I'm the proud owner of 1989 ranger supercab STX 4x4 2.9l 5speed (FM146). My father purchased it new and I've owned it since 1998. It's name is Little Pepe! I take this ranger everywhere, it's my deer slayer and deer hauler. It's hit 4 deer and killed 3! I know where every dent came from! I keep it running mechanically sound and it still looks pretty good, but it's rusting and the tranny is starting to groan. Last week, while four wheeling and looking at new deer hunting grounds, the front end slipped into a concrete culvert and bottomed out on the transmission crossmember. The grass was so high I didn't see the culvert until to late. Now, I need a new one and they are really hard to find. I thought I had one from a '92 ranger in MI, but it was too rusted. I've been reading here about different models and years to look for, so I'll keep looking. If anyone knows of where to get one, please contact me. I'd truly appreciate it. If I can get another crossmember, the next steps are finding another FM146 tranny! I plan to drive thing until it dies or I can't find parts any more. Thanks for listening! Brad

Well unfortunately fm146s are getting pretty hard to find in salt states and the ones that are here tend to be in need of a rebuild. Have you tried https://www.car-part.com ?

You are much more likely to find a 4wd M5 transmission from a later ranger. There is a decent guide in the tech library on upgrading. They shift a lot better when cold too.

Thanks, I figured if I didn't find one, I'd be swapping out the old FM146 for a newer one. First issue is the crossmember, I severely bent mine up! I will try the website you mentioned. thanks again. There is a wealth of knowledge on this website and some really nice setups.
