Hello. Thanks for reading my post.

I am having Hard Start issues with my Ranger. Last month I posted on the forum about a No crank no Start issue. After review and replacing the fuel filter the truck started right up and ran for a week.

Then the same issue; turn key and nothing, no start or crank. So, I went ahead and replaced the Fuel Pump and Wham it started right up again.

However, it has been a week after replacing the fuel pump and I am having Hard Start issues. The truck starts fine once it gets going. But if it sits a while it has trouble starting. Cranks real hard but does not turn over right away. Cranks for a while sometimes.

I thought the battery might be bad so I took it into Walmart and they said it was bad…lol. They gave me a replacement under warranty and the truck started right up again. However, after a day it started to Hard Start again.

The IM/READINESS test came back all good when I changed the fuel pump. Now it says EVAP-CAT-EGR are all RED X.

This year so far, I have replaced: O2 sensors all 3, EGR, Purge Valve, Fuel Filter, Fuel Pump, Fuel Vapor Sensor, DPFE Sensor; Fuel gauge sensors for dash. EVAP issues and all Check Engine lights went away with new Fuel Pump Assembly.

Any input on why this may be happening is appreciated. She Cranks but takes a while to kick over in the morning or after sitting. Once started she re-starts ok unless she sits a while.

Thanks.

All the emissions being not ready is normal after you change battery - the lack of power causes the computer to "restart" on it's emissions learning/tuning, they all initialize in the not ready state and flip to ready after driving "a while" (some I have seen be 5 miles, some GM will never ever reset except under lab conditions).

Cranks but no start. So is it catching and trying to start several times before finally starting or is it just crank away never catching.

Fuel/Air/Fire - back to the same old basics...

Fuel.... got a cheap $5 wally mart tire gauge - check the fuel pressure on the fuel rail schrader valve ... after replacing the pump you SHOULD NOT have a low pressure issue, but a reman or factory dud is a possibility. Make sure the new fuel pump is delivering good pressure.
a squirt of starter fluid always help?

Fire.... back to the timing light, you don't have one right - maybe time to invest... check that you are getting spark during crank.

Intermittent sucks, anything you have noticed that makes it more reproducible (aside from the mentioned shortly after running) - cold mornings, etc.

I have a similar issue with my 93 4.0. It seemed to happen on rainy/damp days. It would only start in the AM with a shot of starter fluid. Then it would start fine the rest of the day. I replaced just about everything. Fuel pressure regulator 2x thinking I got a bad one. One day I pulled the air intake sensor after cranking but no start. The sensor was wet. I left it out while I searched for the ECM. I found the computer in the cab for the transfer case and noticed there was a reset button so figured, what could it hurt. Hit the rest button, replaced the sensor, the truck started right up and has started ever since. I'm no mechanic but I find it hard to believe that the transfer case computer was keeping it from starting. Maybe drying the air intake sensor did it. Or just the fact that it has been dry around here ever since. It's a long shot, but it seemed to have worked for me. At least for now. Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I will see if the IM/READINESS resets after some more driving. It seems to have started up fine now, but I'm waiting to see if it stabilizes or if the issue returns.

Maybe the battery needed to settle in......There is so much to learn about automotive as to symptoms and behaviors/symptoms diagnosis etc. Always something to learn.....here I learn so much.

*I stopped checking fuses and relays to diagnose fuel pump/pcm issues and look to see if the dash CEL light comes on with the key. If so then all that works, correct?.....so many ways to troubleshoot.

*I will update in a few days to see if the issue returns.

*Meantime, thanks for reading my post.

Okay, so after a few days, I had all kinds of issues and codes. So, I am going to outline the issues in a new post with codes, etc.

Thanks.

Is it misfiring what you mean by rough idle? Galloping sound.
Take a rubber deadblow and tap your IAC see if the truck evens out.

My truck went through multiple issues hand in hand, you may be leaking fuel via injector sometimes it's not external which drops stored fuel pressure when sitting.

When IAC goes out it's near impossible for the engine to idle because that's how the computer opens and closes the throttle plate.

Also when you install the new IAC, disconnect the battery for a full day let the computer forget everything.

When installing the new Intake Air Control Valve, make sure it has the gasket and don't tighten too much the bolts break easily.

Fill the tank at least half, you want the truck to idle with hood up for 30mins to an hour before you drive. It will drive and start weird until the computer relearns everything.

It will probably stall the first time you try to start also, that's normal.
