Getting Ready to do a 4.0 swap, questions.

oh bushman how much did your 4.0 clutch cost you

The 4.0 clutch itself is about $100 from Rockauto. But since I'm doing the swap to what was an automatic 2.9, I also have to order the flywheel and such too.

In order to do the conversion, you'll need a manual 4.0 starter, the tin plate that covers the front lip of the bellhousing, and the starter to solenoid wiring harness from the donor 4.0. There's a detailed tech article about it on here.

I got my starter, plate, and harness from Corder's junkyard down on Pond Branch road for about $60.

Ranger harness is easier to do than Explorer harness.

no of anyone whos done it and has a build thread, its from a 93 ranger if it matters, i just wanna make sure i can handle this with being in college and stuff i stay kinda busy so just wanna be sure its not gonna be too much of an ordeal

It's not hard to do, man. I started by opening the bottom of the fuse block, and pulling the wiring for the ECU relay, which connected to the fuel pump and A/C relays. The other end of the wire went to a diode, and then fuses. Follow the wires that you remove, which will pick up the engine harness and ECU. Toss the rest, or (me) keep it for future usage.Took about 1-1.5 hours to do this.

see thats another thing im worried about the guy im buying the stuff from is pulling the harness and all himself and wont just sell me the whole car

well, basically, the only harness that you will need will be the underhood, plus the ECU of course. Do <NOT> need the rest of it (chassis, interior).

ok i gotcha well i found what may be a better deal, 91 explorer sport motor runs its a manual and guy only wants 600 for it, plus hes from my hometown so virtually no gas expenses to go get it and i can pull everything myself, going to check it out/buy it tomorrow! :headbang:

oh also what would you guys suggest i should do to the engine before dropping it in, thinking of redoing most of the gaskets, idk if an oil pump is in the cards for monetary reasons but anything else

When I did mine I did rear main seal and oil pump along with valve cover gaskets, didn't cost much to do them

oh and what would you guys suggest doing to the engine before i put it in, planning on new gaskets but not a new oil pump, i just cant afford it

where'd you get your oil pump it was like 180 where i priced it, def doing rear main and valve covers though
