Getting clutch push rod to lock into place?

I'm having a hell of a time getting the push rod to lock into place on the stud on the clutch pedal. It has those goofy fingers on the push rod that just don't seem to want to lock on the groove on the stud. I'm squeezing it together pretty damn hard with some channel locks and it's still working its way loose after only pushing the clutch in and out only a handful (10-20) times.

Do you really have to squeeze on it that hard to get it to lock into place? Any suggestions?

That locking ring with the four tabs on it should lock into place once it's on far enough.

I took my clutch and brake pedals out today. Oh boy, what a pain in the ass.



If you're not able to get it to work like it should, I'd recommend finding a really stiff clip (just like the one that holds the brake switch on the brake peg) to keep the pushrod locked onto the pedal. Drilling a hole would make it completely fail proof.

I'll probably have the same problem myself here in the next hour as I put mine back together. (ugh, so NOT looking forward to it.)

Yeah I considered ripping the whole assembly out, cutting off the stud, drilling it out, and throwing a bolt in there..but exactly as you said, what a pain in the ass.

I was able to nig-rig it until I can do it the right way (which won't be til this summer when I've got more time). There was another hole in the clutch pedal, so, just above the stud where the push rod attaches to. I ran two wire ties through the hole and around the push rod end, so if it tries to slide off, the wire ties will hold it on. I also ran another piece of wire around it for good measure. That'll hold it for a while.

I finished getting my assembly back in place (cuts on hands galore...) and my clip only had two tabs on it. It still held the clutch on just fine, but I haven't yet been able to test it out with a bunch of repetitions.


I'll find out tomorrow. I'm hoping it's not a problem.
