gearing question for a 2.3

well hi everyone, im new to the site.. i have searched a few times for the right answer but nothing told me what i needed.. i have a 86 ranger shortbed, regular cab, 4x4, 5 speed manual with a 2.3l engine.. i bought it because ive never found another one like it..anything else has the 2.9.. but enough of my mouth...

i bought a 3 inch bodylift for it and it seems to have a 2 inch lift on it already, im looking to run 31 inch tires so i have some chance in mud and on trails when i go wheeling, which isnt alot of the time.. i have the stock d28 and 7.5 and im stuck between 4.11 gears, and 4.56 gears.. i drive it ALOT on the roads, around town, and i go out of town every weekend.. i need to know if i would be fine with 31s and my stock gears, or if i would absolutely have to change my gears for 31s.

what im looking for are gears capable of highway speeds, a decent takeoff, and it needs some help when going up hills. i have 215.17.15 tires on it now and its pretty fast for a stock abused 2.3..

215/17 is one small tire haha but if u go to 31's u would be better off with 4:10's

if your regearing find ones already geared or swap out a 8.8 and d35. Dont put money in the stock axle.

I'd go with 4.56 with a 2.3L.

4cyl 4x4... That is a very sought after truck. Nice find.

Me personally, I'd go with the 4.56 gears. But I like mine a little on the low side. Run it through a gear calculator, if its around 2-2.5K rpm it should be fine. Note that most gear calculators are figured at 1:1, which is your 4th and that the M5 has a considerable overdrive after that.

4.56 for sure IMO. I'd do 8.8 and d35 tho... depends on how you wanna use it. the stock axles will hold 31's depending on how you drive it.

Eh, the 4-cyl version isn't that steep. I think it's only about .85 or so. It's the 4.0 version that has the big overdrive ratio at .75ish.

Actually they both have a .79 overdrive.

It's the lower gears that are different.
That hammer to the head has done you no good...

okay i think when i do get gears im going with 4.56. Another question.. how do i set a picture as a profile picture?? lol
