Needing to replace the fuel tank on a 1987 ranger standard cab long bed,2.9l 4X4 114" wheel base. To clean and line the tank is about about 60 bucks. Rock auto has a three 17 gallon tanks,1. SPECTRA PREMIUM F21C {#E5TZ9002C 2. LILAND GLOBAL IF21C {#E5TZ9002C} 3. DORMAN 576128 {#E5TZ9002C, 576-128}. All for 114 " Wheel base and all within dollars in price from each other(106-114$) shipping 30$. The manual (chiltons 26686) says 1987 ranger had a 15 gallon tank and the BII had a 23 gallon. Same for 83-90. So before i purchase the tank i would like to ask the forum if anybody has replaced this specific fuel tank and if so which tank is the correct one.

I used a F20C tank (single cab short box 2wd) in my '88 single cab, short box, 4wd truck and it works fine but I have a manual shift transfer case. If you have electric shift and try to use that tank you will have problems.

The tank in your picture looks like the F21C tank judging by where the filler neck is. Did it seem to fit OK? I wonder if someone swapped a long box tank into your truck at some point? Might be easiest to go that route if it fit OK and wasn't running into your rear axle...

It was a perfect fit. It is the fuel tank that came on the truck new. 1987 ranger xlt 4x4 2.9l standard cab 7 foot bed. Manual says 15 gallon but no part number.

Looked it over real good but no part number. Is there a certain place it would be. The tank is 51" long 12 " high and almost 12 " wide.

@dirtymike ,
Your photo looks like the 17gl version. Mine had a 17gl tank; from what I remember, the dual tank Rangers had the 15gl tank in front + 12gl behind the axle, single tanks were 17gl. The 17 has a duck bill in the front, while the 15gl is more of a flat nose.

Oooooooooooooh... then the F21C tank is the correct one for your truck. You have the 114" wheelbase, NOT 108. 108" is a single cab short box (6' bed.)

Just to clear things up here I see that you edited your original post that said you had a 108" wheelbase

Chilton's manual is full of misprints. I only see 3 sizes available from the major manufacturers. Last 2 in part number is 2A,2C or 2D(OEM ford). Looks like mine is 2C.

Dyslexic or old. I got both

Amazon from Dorman (576-128) of all places is the cheapest! 105 free ship. Yes sir i edited the first post to reflect 114 "

Going all the way to the injectors this time. Follow the red fuel.

It had a thick black protective boot(duck Bill) that slipped on the front end gaz ?, i forgot to take a pic. When it comes in do some pics as i place it in. Should have done this a long time ago.

I took that stupid duck bill boot thing off mine. It just fills up full of mud and rusts out the tank although maybe having it on there would prevent rocks hitting it and ripping a hole in the tank?

I tend to "try" to place things the way they were taken off by Me but sometime i wonder what the last guy was thinking, usually a manufacturer. Engineers are a tough crowd to argue with. That physics stuff is a azz kicker.lol

got tank in. Dorman fit pretty good. Paid 114 bucks to the door through Amazon in three days.
