Anyone know of good sounding speakers that fit under the speaker grilles?

I have some sort of not crappy ones. They were the closest thing Crutchfield had but they don't fit quite right because they are for a 4-point mounting rather than a 3 like the original ones. I don't remember who made them, but I've had them for years and they aren't terrible. I am thinking maybe SoundStream.

I have some 4" jvc 3ways in my 84 b2 that arent too bad but they do not mount correctly and the magnet hits the plastic duct on the pass side. Ill be replacing soon and mounting them on top of the factory grill.

LOL, I have had a set of Polks mounted that way for like 15 years.

I get tired of leaves and crap getting stuck in front of them and would love to go back to just plain grilles.

I found some marine 3 way speakers that once mounted are only about an 1/8" tall/thick. I may have some original speaker grills layin around if your looking.

Ive been considering door speakers but i cant cut up my 100% rust free doors.

I kept the original ones, I plasma cuttered the holes in the ones out of my parts truck. I have a new dash to swap in eventually that has the grilles that came with it too so I am pretty well covered with grills.

I would love something that fits below the grilles so it looks factory. With a loud exhaust, mud tires and no A/C it is more like a motorcycle radio than a sound booth rolling down the highway.

Cutting the grilles out worked but they are not flat so you have gap at one side or the other too. Could get fancy and just cut out a piece of plate but it won't line up with the dash either.

I seen what you mean when i looked at mine today. Ill see what i come up with and post it up when finished.

This is what I have now.

Those dont look too bad. But they are a bit tall. And i can see how stuff would end up stuck in front.

Best bet is to mod the mounting points and fit a 5 1/4 speaker in there.

What I have works, I want something that looks stock and sounds better that petrified 30+ yo junkyard speakers.

I put some Memphis PR's in the dash of mine but I had to make my own mounts

I had a set of really cheap Pyle 4" that worked ok. Not much bass, but loud enough and clear. I don't think you'll get much bass in the dash. It's open under the speaker so there's nothing to bounce the bass back up.
