Ford Escape Front Hub/Bearing Questions

I have a bad bearing in the Escape. I'm looking at the hub and bearing setup in the pics and wondering what tools I'm going to need to pull this hub and bearing. Can maybe a Ford Tech chime in and tell me the way I need to go about this?

You need a press and some pieces to support the knuckle/bearing while you press it out and back in.

You first have to press the wheel stud flange out of the bearing, then you remove the large snap ring from behind the bearing. You can then press the entire bearing out.

Press in the new one, install the snap ring. Support the inner race of the bearing and press in the wheel stud flange until it bottoms out.

That's about it.
 
yep, sasquatch nailed it, youll need a press and some penetrating lube (just to make it go back together smoothly and straight). the worst part of the job is usually just getting the knuckle off so you can put it into the press.
 
Damn, so the knuckle's got to come out? I was hoping to do it on the thing. Sounds like an excuse to buy a press =).

You can do it with appropriate sized drifts and a large hammer but a press is by far the better way. The knuckle has to come off either way.
 
we do these kind of bearings at work and usually charge $48.00 to press an old bearing out and a new one in. its pretty easy as long as you have access to a press, otherwise you might be able to take it to a repair shop and pay them to press it for you?

My friend owns a shop, I just talked to him and he said bring it in and use his stuff. I didn't think to ask him before if he had a press. He also told me he's got one of the ball joint/u-joint presses I can use for the Ranger =).

I haven't got to this project yet because I'm no fan of working on vehicles in a snowstorm (I know, I'm a sissy).

I thought I would share something I found interesting. I bought a Timken bearing for the replacement. When I opened the box, I saw the bearing said SKF on it. I thought this was odd, but we use SKF all the time at work with no issues so I'm cool with it. Then I read on the back of the box, and it says:

Distributed by The Timken Company. Timken Service Parts are carefully chosen from select manufacturers.

I did not know this information, I thought they made all of their own stuff. So I learned something new today.

Dang i came here to ask the same question. Good thing i looked around.

Awesome work. I haven't done it yet, but I need to soon. It's getting louder. If my wife would park the thing for more than 5 minutes, I might be able to get to it. :D

Yeah, she gets a lot done in a day so I won't complain. Mine's already got 102,000 miles on it and it's an '06.
 
Press is the prefered method, but the job can be done with a couple right sized cheap crapsman sockets and a 4 pound mini sledge. Find someone with a good bench vise and you should be set. Just dont go crazy with the hammer when your putting the new one back in.

Make sure you wear them safety glasses if you go the socket method as they are hardened steel and can shatter just like glass when you strike them.
 
I pulled the knuckle off and took it with the new parts to a shop. They charged me $40 to swap them. Took an hour for them and it was $$ well spent for me.
 
Well, I am finally digging into this 5 months later. I am in the middle of it and have everything apart. The CV boot came apart again and slung grease all over the damn place. So I went got another Duralast Gold unit from the warranty exchange. Now I am just waiting on my buddy to get here to his shop so I can use his press. It has only taken me a total of 45 minutes so far and 10 of that was dragging all of my tools out.

Would this bearing being bad eat a CV boot?
