I have a rusty 86 bronco ii with an fm145 and 1350 manual tcase. My 1990 bronco ii is a a4ld, electric 1354 that somehow works, has a rear cv shaft. The fm145 shifts great makes no noise. Both transmissions are supposed to be total junk from what I read. So should I put the fm145 in place of the a4ld? If I do will I have to use a clutch pedal assembly out of a 1990 or will the 86 ones work? The gear ratios in the fm145 seem like they would do better with 31" tires vs the a4ld. The 86 also has a new driveshaft with u joints, so that is a bonus.

Neither trans is particularly robust, that is correct. This one is tough.

The A4LD has many known issues, but the tools to repair one still exist. That is not true of the FM145, which has been known to break gears.

The 145 is shorter, and would require the use of the drive shafts that are with it, and that U-joint drive shaft has many benefits over the CV shaft.

The 145 has the worst clutch slave setup of the Rangers though, and use of a 88+ pedal would be required.

I think I'd go with the A4LD and hold the 145 in reserve.
