Greetings. I'm cleaning up the 5spd swap on my '86 BII. Truck was originally an auto w/the floor mounted transfer case shifter. The previous owner swapped in a FM145 5spd. I'm assuming it was out of a ranger because the front drive shaft is old and crusty and the rear is brand new. Dude bragged about that. So I'm assuming it's now running whatever transfer case is normally behind a FM145 (I'm still learning) and he got a new rear shaft since one from a Ranger won't work. I got my hands on an original floor boot and whatnot so I yanked the old mess off to discover my 4x4 shifter is all hacked and floppy. Can someone show me the difference between the brackets and linkage assembly between a auto and manual trans with the floor 4x4 shifter? Or has a good side picture of it bolted to a FM145? I'd go back to where I got the shifter boot but that junkyard is 500 miles away. Also I'd love to get the clutch interlock functioning but that's another adventure.

Here is what I'm dealing with.

Thanks.

The transfer case shifter bolts to the intermediate adapter piece on the tail of the transmission. I will look for a picture.

I attached a picture of the shifter. The bolt that holds it on goes in a hole on the tail of the transmission. They don't show that clearly in the picture but they do show the shifter sort of hovering in mid air.

That's helpful. The shape is fairly different from what I can see. I managed to track down a photo of someone selling an entire 2.9/AL4D package with all the linkage attached.

There are two versions for the BW1350.

There was a manual that used the left one, the C5 also did (what I had it on) The right one is a later one. The little levers on the t-case changed too (some could be removed) From my old thread a FM146 t-case uses a different lever than others.

You might find this of interest too.

So I finally acquired the correct shift gate and lever. I have it bolted up but I can't seem to get it adjusted correctly. Do the 2H and 4H positions rely on the gate or is there a detent in the transfer case? I'm thinking now the the lever on the transfer case is off now. It does not work smoothly. I'll see if I can post a video tomorrow.

Detent in the case, the gate is just so the monkey tugging on the lever can't pop it into 4lo without meaning to.

Hence why I bought the shift gate! haha

I definitely have something else wrong then. I can't really feel a difference in 2HI and 4HI. From what I can "feel" its going from 4LO to 2HI without stopping at 4HI. Pkus I know it shouldn't take the amount of effort it currently does. Or, maybe, it's not going into 2HI at all.

Thinking back on it, I'm not sure I could feel the detent between 2HI and 4HI before I messed with it. Maybe it's all just worn out. This transmission has a really loud whine in 1 / 3 / 5 so it wouldn't surprise me if it's and the t-case are worn out. Do they put a 1350 behind the A4LD?

I guess I'll tear the shifter back off and see if I can feel it by moving the t-case lever by hand and go from there.

Do you have the plastic spool on the stub coming out of the t-case?

Did you change the stub lever coming out of the t-case to match the rest of the linkage?

The plastic spool is there. I did not change the stub lever. I never thought to grab that part. I assumed the t-case was from the 5spd truck and had the correct one on it. For some reason I thought the t-case was different between the auto and manual transmissions. The truck currently has the 1350 in it.

It is in the article I linked earlier, you gotta get that little stub lever too. On some trucks it is not removable though... if yours has a nut holding the stub lever on swap away.

If yours doesn't, you are going to have to DIY or swap t-cases...

I just re-read the whole thread and I can see I'm a bone head. You clearly stated I needed that too.
