Finally I'm doing it!!! My 2000 Ford Ranger explorer 5.0 V-8 build thread with pics!

you need to deal with a different yard...or deal harder

No matter where I would have gone they are all the same man. Short block means it does not come with any accessories...period. And he did throw in quite a bit for me. More than most places would so I got pretty lucky. They don't include the accessories that you should be able to swap over from your motor. Thing is since I don't have a core to take old parts from he threw in the mounts, plates, harness, ecu, and brackets for the front of the motor. Most yards up here won't do that unless you pay a ton extra.

Ok you're a little off on your terminology. A shortblock is just an assembled block. Longblock is assembled block and heads.

I tend to agree with bobby that you should of gotten a bit more with that motor, but if you're happy thats all that matters. I just deal a little bit harder I suppose.

Ok first off....I know what it means but at the junk yards they call it a "short block" because it comes with no accessories. So I am just using the term as a reference to it not having accessories on it. This is the only forum I post on where people feel the need to find stupid crap to correct others on. I don't know about where you live but $435 was a GREAT deal for a motor up here. The ONLY motors that I could get as a "complete drop in" were well over a grand and this was one of the cheapest motors at $350 and he threw in the front brackets for the accessories, motor mounts (which were still in the truck, he took them out for me) engine plates, ECM, complete wiring harness, and battery cable wiring harness which are hard to come by up here not all cut up. It was a great deal. Alternators up here are $10 if you pull it as well as power steering pumps, coil packs and wires are about $25 and I have the compressor already so I'm still under $500 in the whole motor complete and ready to drop in. Much better than over a grand for a "drop in" motor. To me that is a hell of a deal.

Sometimes those you tell at, for trying to educate you on the proper terms that your junk yards has screwed up on, are the only ones that will have the information you seek when you really need it... Piss them off, and youre on your own...I would not learn anything from someone at a junk yard... They are not mechanics, they can't fix cars... They are given bolt cutters and hack saws to do their job... They use brute force tiger things out... That's NOT a place to learn how to fix a car, the average junk yard worker hasn't even graduated high school...
