Picked up a very used 91 Explorer Sport 4x4 with 5 speed today. Grinds going into 2nd up shifting and down shifting. not bad but annoying. Could this be a synchronizer?
If its only in second gear then yup the syncro ring is worn out, if it grinds in other gears then a worn dragging clutch, if you time your shift and throttle just right you can get a lot less grind and more useable time out of it
