My neighbor sold me his neglected '98 Ranger that has mostly sat the past couple of years, for virtually nothing. 112k miles. Needs lots of little things but no fatal problems that I've found (yet). The A/C even works! Important in the south. I plan to use it as a home project go-getter rather than a primary car.

It ran very poorly, obviously a misfire, and of course had a CEL. The obvious problem was an intake pipe that was wrapped in duck tape. I went to a junkyard and found what i thought was the same one from an Explorer, but it lacks the bung for an air temperature sensor close to the manifold. Unable to find an exact match in the yard, I just drilled a hole and stuck it in. I'll keep an eye out for the correct part.
Still ran rough, replaced all the plug and wires. Now it ran great! I cleared the codes and drove it for about 60 miles. I didn't have a CEL but I did have two "pending" codes:
P0141 - O2 sensor heater circuit bank 1 sensor 2.
P0401 EGR "A" Flow Insufficient Detected.
This weekend I replaced the rear O2 sensor and the DPFE sensor, as well as fixed an EGR vacuum leak which may have been the cause of that code in the first page. After another ~60-70 miles of driving, my scanner shows no pending codes and 'rediness' is met, so I expect to pass emissions tomorrow and can finally register it.
As this truck has sat, the cab is moldy. I need to steam clean it and attack it with some anti-mold product of some kind. Coolant is rusty, I need to flush that and put in some fresh mix. There appears to be a small head gasket leak at #3, with coolant (rusty water) leaking down the block. That spark plug was also rusty. There's no water in the oil, but I hope the rusty coolant doesn't point to a more serious problem. There's no steam in the exhaust either.
Then the factory radio needs to go as it's quite broken. The passenger seatback adjustment lever has snapped off with the seat in recline, so I need to at least get it back to a comfortable level.
Anyway, there we are. No radical plans, just hope to use it around town for my home improvement projects. In its golden years it's not likely to get many additional miles.
