Speedometer seems to drop or surge forward about 5-8mph on the gauge. Seems to especially happen while the truck is in gear and I either apply or lift throttle (e.g. maintaining speed at 50mph, in 4th gear, applying throttle seems to cause it to drop or jump, as does lifting throttle/engine braking). Needle doesnt bounce at all if I press in the clutch and just coast, it behaves as I would expect, nice and smooth.

Just replaced the speedometer cable with a brand new unit, which I also lubed prior to installing, and it tested good before installing, very smooth.

I'm suspecting a problem down by the transfer case. Anyone have an idea what might be wrong?

Must be the VSS, I have this on my truck:

Got to be the problem....

Did you lube the speedo as well? try a couple of drops of 3 in 1 oil in the back of the speedo

Speed sensor fixed it, still a slight wobble but only between 1-2 mph swing max, a huge improvement.
