(my real name is wyatt, i live in spokane, its not as fun as the desert......)
im epic newbie here, who has a few questions and i figured i should just ask all at once so,(there all for an 83-92 ranger)
(ahhh what got me into rangers?......... my dads ranger.....)
1. when you do the swap from the 2.0~9 to a 4.0, have you gotten better or worse mpg?
2. can some one give me a step-by-step on how to go from an auto to a stick, also what is the best manual transmission?
(right now im just looking for some info...)
3. what needs to be done(like what parts do you need and what goes were) to install dual gas tanks?
(when i buy a ranger i will change/delete(if theres no way to change it) this username)
my dads ranger was 88~9 ranger with a 4inch lift and was primer gray with black were the primer wore off, but it was a fun little truck.

i have sifted through the tech library and these would be the only subjects that were sketchy or unclear on what exactly to do (or no step-by-step)
i also find photos to be of great help.....

Welcome to the forums bud, Ok first off milage will get worse with a 4.0 swap as bad as a V8 worse to be exact. The best 5 speed really matters on what truck you have and what was in it to begain with. If i'm reading correctly you want to swap a 4.0 into a 83-92 ranger. The 2.9 dosn't become availble till 85 I belive and it comes with a FM-145 tranny, in 1988 the tranny changes to FM-146 it's a bit longer so the tranny crossmember is moved back meaning unless you move the crossmember back you can't interchange them. Now the best tranny for the 4.0 in the earlier years was the M50D-R1 it will fit in place of the FM-146 but not the FM-145 on the 4X4s, unless you move back the crossmember. The bell housing are the same for all three trannys. So you can leave the 2.9 in the truck and swap in 4.0 tranny (M50D-R1). Between the Fm-145 and the FM-146 the 146 is the better choice. If you have a 2wd. the 2.9 comes with a FM-132 from '88-'92, M50D-R1 will still bolt up.

I can't go step by step but to change from a auto to a manual you gonna need. A tranny of course. and shift linkage and shifter.

-FM-145, FM-146, M50D

Second a new engine wire harness from a 5 speed truck, unless you want to rewire the auto harness. Yes the tranny and engine harness are one piece. You'll also need a ECU from the same 5speed truck.

Third you'll need a clutch peddle and shift cable.

Forth the 5 speed trannys are hydrolic so you'll need a clutch reservior and hydrolic line to the slave cylinder. Whouldn't hurt to replace the slave cylinder while your at it.

Fifth depends on if you have a floor shifter or a column shifter if you have a column shift you night want to swap out to a column from a 5speed.

Thats all I can think of off the top of my head you need to check out the tranny section of the forums and post up your questions there you'll prolly get a little more detailed answers. Remember the tech library is your friend tons of info to learn and grow from. Again welcome I hope I answered some of your question but don't be afraid to ask. Make sure you make a build thread for you truck and take lots of pictures we love that!:icon_thumby:

conclusion of mpg question: go figure.....
i didnt see anything about dual tanking in the tech library....
just doing research and looking for the info before i buy anything.

today i got a 86 xlt ranger, with a 2.9, auto hubs and an electric t-case, the only problem is its an auto and needs a new engine..... this one sounds like a diesel (no offence to diesel lovers) but is a gas..... plans are
1. new engine
2. manual tranny, t-case and hubs. (at same time)
3. 3" suspension
4. install tach.
5. dual tanks.......
cant find memory card so i cant get the pictures off my cell phone... if you know what needs to be done for any of these things please do tell me......
