I have a 1990 Ford Ranger XCab with a 3" body Lift & 5.5 Suspension Superlift, 35 x 12.50 mud terains and 496 gears. Truck is a stock 2.9 that is just about to die. I would like to put a 302 in it but im not sure what tranny would bolt up to the 302 and stock transfer case or if i should replace the t-case as well. I know Advanced Adapters no longer sell the adapter for a T5

any help would be greatly appreciated!

i found a Lincoln Mark iv with a 302HO and tranny for $500 but im not sure if this tranny will work for my situation.

With the donor you found, there are a few options. Buy it for just the engine and use a different 4x4 trans. Or if you don't plan on beating the hell out of it this would be the rare case I would suggest an adapter. Order the adapter for the AOD/4r70 that should be in that car and adapt it to the stock t-case. If you are going to abuse it, a stock ranger t-case won't hold. You will either have to source a tailshaft and housing to make that transmission accept a t-case or use a different transmission. From there you can use any 6 bolt fullsize t-case. From my experience the Np208 and 205 fit the best.

thanks for the info, i want to make the swap as simple and painless as possible, so you know of a donor vehicle that would be a direct swap everything from engine, tranny and transfercase or would everything have to be pieced together. the 302 itself isnt too hard to find but the ideally id like to find everything i need from one vehicle. maybe a bronco or f150?

Depends on what you want to do whether you can get it all from one vehicle. Say you want EFI and overdrive, you could use everything from an f150/bronco donor, t-case would be a tight fit so you may source that somewhere else. Of you want carb and overdrive so you want something that had an AOD so the trans isn't computer controlled. Or EFI with a manual trans computer and a C4 or C6 transmission. There are quite a few options. If you use a NP208 t-case get that from a Bronco it will have a fixed yoke. You could use that you have been looking at and either get an adapter to use a stock Ranger t-case or call up a local transmission shop and just get a 4x4 tailshaft and housing for that transmission and get a a fullsize t-case. The parts are common so they shouldn't be all that expensive. Only issue there is you need to know how to tear a transmission apart or pay to have it done.

Sigh....

Look at the other threads in this section, allot of people ask this every week.

Take a look at my thread.

thaks again for the info. heres a quick breakdown of what id like to do. finding the right donor with all the pieces is where im stuck. i dont know which vehicle to look for as a donor with all these parts.

-id like to keep the truck fuel injected
-id like to keep it a manual transmission

-wanted to use a 302 and t5 tranny from a mustang but from what ive read the adapters are no longer available. i know of several applications that i can use as far as an automatic tranny goes but not much as far as manual.

so the question is what vehicle can i get a fuel injected 302 that comes with a manual transmission that will line up close to stock and transfercase that will go into my ranger.

projectnitemare thanks for the info, love your build by the way, lots of good info

To stay manual go with 97-03 f150 r2. Its a 5 speed get it the t/c and shift linkage. The tranny will hold up lng as u aint romping to much. I dnt knw how ur speedometer hooks up in ur ranger. Depending on that will decide which t/c ul want. I run a 85 model. The cable goes into the t/c. So il be running a older t/c
