I have a 2003 Mazda B4000 2WD with a bad engine and "iffy" trans, and a 2003 Ranger 4WD with a good engine and rebuilt trans. I would like to swap the good engine and trans from the Ranger to the Mazda. I have been told that converting the 4WD trans to 2WD is a major project. Is this the case? Can this be done without too much difficulty?

welcome! one of the guys with experience will come and answer for you in a bit. some people have asked this a few times though so you might find hte answer yourself while reading before someone answers for you

I would put in the 4wheel trans. Assuming the same frame length, just use the driveshaft that comes with it. Make sure it's in 4-hi and leave it. Or put in the shifter and have 4-low for moving trailers around.

I think the only difference between a 4X4 transmission and a RWD transmission is the tail housing. If both trucks are the same (Supercab/Supercab or Regular cab/Regular cab), I believe all you have to do is remove the tail housing that mates to a transfer case and install the tail housing from the original transmission.

If the cab styles are different, then it’s going to get interesting because the driveshafts are going to be different lengths.
