Good Afternoon All,
Whelps.....
My 1995 Ford Ranger XLT 4x4 Automatic V6 4.0L gave up its ghost the other day,
Looking to replace the motor,
What year Rangers or Explorers or V6 4.0L will be a direct swap replacement??
Not interested in the rebuild of the existing motor, just want to R&R the motor, but I have no Knowledge of what years I can use,
Thank You,
Robert

In my own opinion... a general rule of thumb is not to use an engine older than what you already have. The OHV 4.0 is the same from 1991-2000 and it’s found in rangers or explorers and also aero star vans...
Rangers 1991-2000
Explorers- 1991-2000
Not exactly sure of the Aerostar vans.
If you get a newer engine 1997+ , all you have to do is swap over all the stuff from the donor engine.
Intake, fuel rail, injectors, coolant sensor/temp sensor, wiring etc... basically take everything off your engine and put it on your “new” engine and you’re set!

+1 ^^^^

4.0l OHV was used from 1990-2000 in a few Ford vehicles, and Mazda B4000
Some models have cross over years with BOTH 4.0l OHV and 4.0l SOHC, SOHC was a pay extra upgrade, so don't just go on 4.0l

In 1997 the 4.0l OHV got an 8 bolt crankshaft, so your 1995 6 bolt Flexplate wouldn't work on a 1997-2000 4.0l OHV, you would need to get an 8 bolt flexplate, not a big deal but could be a "surprise" if you didn't know, lol

Always change the rear main seal when an engine is out

Always seat torque converter inside the bell housing as far in as it will go, before mating trans and engine, you should NEVER have to force engine and automatic trans together, should just slide together, flush
