Hey guys. I'm on the side of the road now trying to figure this out.

Was driving along and engine died. Didn't seize luckily. It was very sudden like I had turned the key off. Still had all functions in vehicle besides engine running. I sprayed starting fluid in intake and nothing happened. I checked for spark. I have spark. Well at least in the front cylinder.ill be checking the rest after this post.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Verified all cylinders have spark.

What might cause such a sudden shutting off?

Thanks again

did it sputter and cut out or just instantly die?

Instantly
I'm guessing computer sensed a condition (I have no idea what) and told fuel injectors not to inject anymore.

Fuel pump....connect a pressure gauge to the fuel rail or disconnect fuel filter and hold your thumb on the line coming from your tank and have a helper turn the ignition on/off a few times. If you can hold back the fuel then the pump is shot cuz you aint gonna hold back 50-70 psi with your finger it will spray all over the place.

If it's the pump you don't need the entire assembly get these two items:

Pump: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/we...l-pump-airtex_20771350-p?searchTerm=fuel+pump

Strainer: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/we...trainer-bosch_20770313-p?searchTerm=fuel+pump

Change filter too while you're at it: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/we...beck-arnley_20571041-p?searchTerm=fuel+filter

Yeah, guess what. The computer isn't that smart.

Either you lost the fuel pump, or the computer. Check fuel pressure.

It'll be fuel pump. I later checked fuel rail pressure and found essentially 0 psi.

Maybe YOU have a wonky inertia switch...it's gotta be someone on here because I seem to be stuck on that one...if you do, try to reset it...it would be under the passenger side dash...has a reset button right on it...

If that doesn't work...you can always try bypassing it because if they fry, they fry...and kill the fuel pump...

yeah, i found the inertia switch and it wasn't popped up. i'm assuming thats good.

i have replaced the fuel pump in the past (35000 miles ago) and maybe the replacement was low quality. or since i usually run the tank nearly empty to minimize time at gas stations, i'm thinking that may have cause it to die early.

first though, i'll check fuses when it gets lighter outside.

oh, and it got towed home just fine. Gonna tear into it very soon.

btw, if i connect an obd 2 and crank it, would that tell me anything about the system while in the ignition process?

you should be able to hear the fuel pump on key cycle (maybe not on the side of the road) but make sure there's actually fuel in the tank... been there... :)

I was going to say timing belt, but if there isn't any fuel pressure then it won't run...

so i hear what sounds like the pump priming, but when i check fuel rail pressure, its only about 20 psi. and once i relieve pressure on the fuel rail, it doesn't repressurize. could it be that in the startup sequence, the pump primes, but for regular running, the pump is not given signal to run? is the fuel pump simply on or off, or is the priming controlled seperately from the normal running mode? i already killed the battery once by fiddling, so i have to wait on the charge to return. unfortunately, i only have 1 amp chargers so i put 2 on at the same time. :p

i'll be searching the interwebs and haynes manual for useful info, but still appreciate any recommendations.

thanks!

The fuel pump primes for 2-3 sec each time you go from Off to Run.
Once the engine is running, the PCM sees the Crank Sensor signal and keeps the pump running.

Have you verified your timing belt hasn't snapped?
Pull the top of the cover back and look for the top pulley turning when you crank.

Yeah, I hear the prime and the max priming pressure I have gotten so far is 30 psi. If I relieve pressure, crank it without turning key off-on again, and pressure comes back would mean that pump is fine? I'll have ladyfriend crank it while I check pressures tonight.

Haven't checked timing belt. Will do that tomorrow. Never tore into this engine, so I want to read up on it first.

Fuel pump bro....mine did the same exact thing about a year ago....i was on my way home from work going up a hill and it instantly DIED. :bawling:

You can still hear it whine with KOEO but that doesn't mean it's pumping correctly....you gotta have high pressure for it to squirt gas through the injectors.

I think i found my timing belt...

Sorry it's upside down. :p

Then I pulled it out to find this:

So now that my timing is f-ed, what sort of problems could that have caused? Pistons hitting valves and such? How easy is setting timing? I'll read manual tonight
