I've decided to just do a V8 swap instead of rebuilding the little 2.0l in my 87 Ranger. I haven't found the parts I'm looking for yet, but there's some other budget considerations I need to address first.

I've never had any machine work done to an engine and I was wondering if anyone could give me a ballpark estimate on the costs? Not planning a balanced and stroked race engine, just a little freshening up work. Cleaned, fluxed, honed, decked, install cam bearings and maybe a valve job and some crank workif money allows and if necessary.

Anything specific I need to ask for?

Thanks,
Joe

My 2.9L was around $350 for clean, hone, install cam bearings, cam & freeze plugs. Cam polish and crank polish (all std). No head work as I had bought new heads.

My 5.0L was about $800 for magnafluxing heads, crank, block. Cam bearings installed and freeze plugs. Rods reconditioned with ARP bolts installed and installed on pistons. Heads reworked/cleaned, block cleaned. Cylinders bored .030". Balanced. Crank turned. Plus some more that I can't recall. I know a guy at the shop though, he did some things that weren't on my sheet. I told him I just wanted it done right.

I am estimating that I'll have it in for next spring.

Prices will vary depending on area. Go to the shop and get an estimate and have them evaluate what you have.

I have a 302 engine with 1k worth of machine work. It just depends on what you want and who does it.
If you have a race track or drag strip in your area you could ask around for a good place.

if you shop you can find a good long block with all the work done for around $800,with a decent warr.

if you want stock.

Its going to depend on your area really. I have over $1500 in machine work alone done on my engine but its not a typical build either. I did have an engine completely short blocked from the same shop for under a grand though. Pick up your phone book there should be a listing in the automobile section for automotive machining. Call all those places and as around for others.
