On a separate, yet related topic, my rear brake cables were old and rusted out so I replaced them and now am having a tough time getting them connected up to the front. Or, I can get the drivers side connected to the front fine but then can't get the passenger side rear connected to the bracket.

Any suggestions? I'm thinking having a second person would help?

Assuming you got the correct wheel base, the brake pedal needs to be released and cable routing needs to be correct. It makes a huge difference.

I was having problems until I got the passenger side cable routed correctly. It was still a bit tight but do able once the routing was correct.

I think the adjusters had to be all the way in as well, but I'm not 100% sure on that one.

I duplicated the routing from how it was, so it theory that's correct. Where are the adjusters that you speak of? I didn't see them when I was running the cables.

I'm guessing he's talking about the starwheel inside the drum...

So they're not connected to the drums right now. I figured I was going to connect them together and them get them set to the shoes.

There is an automatic slack adjuster built into the parking brake pedal mechanism, takes up the excess cable,

But I don't remember how to release it.

Do you have any images you can share that shows where you are having the problem connecting to the driver's side?
I just went through this on my '94 and it was a pain unless you have the proper routing and the correct hardware. I see that you duplicated the previous set-up, however...

Having the correct connections on the drivers side where the cable from the front connects to the cables from the rear is convoluted and unless you get it right it ain't gonna work.

And yes, as 2011Supercab says, you can pull the parking brake pedal to release the slack, but if everything is routed correctly with the right hardware, then you may not have to do that.
That cable from the parking brake cable to the rear is spring loaded and you can pull it backward a few inches, so a second person there may help, but you can do it alone - a pain, but it can be done.

There are a quite a few strings on parking brake replacement as well and those strings may also help.
