Can I run the 2.8 without the alternator hooked up for a short while? I want to see how well this engine runs in the pinto before I sink more money into it.
Do I just run battery+ to the coil?

A battery should run it for a little while; the more charged the better. And I'm pretty sure if it's got a points distributor, all that would be needed is +12 volts on the coil. What I'm not sure of, is if the motor has a distributor with a vane and pickup coil, if just the one power would run it.

Its not points. It looks like a pickup coil and vane. Guess all I can do is try. Looking at wiring diagrams and it doesn't seem that the alternator and duraspark share any wires.

Second question;
If I hooked the stator and field wires backwards, would it have produced sparks? As in blown the diodes? Because sparks happened first time I tried to start it. Going out rn to check F and S wires....

Edit;
Looks like I did indeed switch the field and stator wires... FML. Looks like I toasted the alternator. Now to see if I can get parts to repair it.

Ordered a rebuild kit from amazon for $35.00. Delivery on the 21st.
New alternator is $180 up here...

Went and looked at the wires a second time and they are not switched! I think I'll look for a 3rd time in the morning after coffee and see what's actually what... Lol.

Ordered a new regulator as well.

Duraspark will work without the alternator as long as the battery is charged but the module will eventually overheat and die running 12v without a resistor.
