so i just acquired a 89 ranger. 4x4, gen 1 i guess, v6 ,2.9 , 5 speed. and got it running pretty good. still a few problems but all in all it drives pretty good for a 30 year old truck. now my thing is i hadn't drove a stick in 30 years. but when i did if you were on a hill or even a small incline an pushed in the clutch the truck would roll back or forward accordingly. this one will not. i can sit on a pretty good incline. in neutral or with the clutch in and no brakes on. and no roll at all. if i turn off the motor. it rolls very easy. is this normal?? i remember learning to drive a stick 40 years ago. and the vehicle would roll on inclines. and in neutral very easy with motor running.
shouldnt the truck roll in neutral or with clutch pushed in easily with motor running?

Welcome to TRS.

The truck should roll around in N or with the clutch down. You may have a brake sticking, but since it rolls when you shut the engine off you probably have a clutch release issue. The slave cylinder is a common point of failure, which is unfortunate since it means the trans has to come out.

If that turns out to be the case I would get a master and slave set and bleed the whole thing before installing since it is easiest to bleed holding all the parts upside down.

Lastly, an 89 would be a Gen 2. The break down is 83-88 gen 1, 89-92 gen 2, 93- whenever was all the rest, they changed in spurts after that.
