My credo
If you can't go through it or around it, then go over it.
What setting on the multimeter is for 12v DC? Like for checking the voltage from the alternator at the battery because none of these settings return anything close to what my voltmeter says.

First one to the right. DCV

Never seen a meter with all those settings, looks like it’s got features that are designed for the automotive world.

I got it from autozone. I used it to trouble shoot the air conditioner for my house.

The reason I wasn’t showing anything on any setting is my test leads for the battery came unhooked. Went directly to the battery and the charging system on my Bike works fine. My volt meter doesn’t work when it gets hot. Guess I need a new volt meter.

Hot as in the sun beating down it or hot as it has a thermal protector in the system?

Probably both…. It started doing it at temps about 75 ambient. It was start at 13.9v with my phone plugged in and heated hand grips on high. Then over the course of my 42 mile commute it would drop to 12.0v or even 11.9v. But the battery light never comes on. After a month of this it just started showing 12.3v all the time… and random voltages about 75 degrees. After I figured out what I was doing wrong, my multi meter showed 14.0 at the battery and the voltmeter showed 12.3…. Then it quit working all together. I’m pretty sure it’s the meter. The bike lives out in the weather and so does the meter. I got a year out of my combination dual USB port/ with digital volt meter I bought from Amazon for $9.99 just so I could plug in my phone and temporary heated grips. Now I have permanently wired heated hand grips and a proper ip67 dual 2 amp usb port accessory plug….. and I’m going to get either a snow machine volt meter or a marine grade volt meter.
