truck's drinking coolant at what seems a fair clip. i'm putting a cup or so in every time i drive it and its sucking it down.

temp is standing on "R" or slightly higher most of the time once warmed up.

oil looks ok. changed it 70 miles ago.

the truck doesn't go far, ever, frequently less than 10 miles out and back.

there's moisture on the passenger side floorboard. could be red herring since it rained recently and maybe there's a simple water leak somewhere else. whatever is soaking into the carpet doesn't smell like coolant.

but i did go ahead and take the heater core housing off and observed it. no signs of leaks.

core hoses are okay externally. i loosened them and tried to pull them off to look at the insides but they're stuck on there and i'd have to really pull -- or cut -- to get 'em off, and don't want to, since the core doesn't look to be leaking and circulation seems ok.

the radiator does have a very slight leak on the left side. not enough of one to account for the consumption. tiny drips. then again, i haven't looked at it while doing 45 down the road, of course... so if its spewing while in transit, i can't tell. doesn't seem to be leaving any residue sprayed out anywhere that would indicate that though. the radiator's a modine, of indeterminate age.

hoses all seem ok.

any clues to help avoid a trip to a mechanic and $$$ would be much appreciated...

Sounds like radiator to me, It should be changed anyway if it has a leak and then see what happens

Well I think I have the answer: into the oil. Radiator's gonna get replaced of course but that leak still seems very minor.

Dipstick was soaked above max and looking like mud so I changed the oil again. Looked horrible. Pulled some plugs and they looked way too clean, too. I used cheap regular oil for this change, threw in a bottle of Barr's, and will change it again with some good synth 5w30 shortly, and hope it keeps running until I find a donor vehicle and go for the swap...

I've read over and over the 4.0L is the answer but that's gonna be challenging for me. Leaning towards just hunting down a healthy 2.9L...
